Questions Regarding ProFractional Laser Treatments

What is the ProFractional Laser Treatment?
This fractional approach to laser skin treatment represents the latest science for cosmetic skin surgery that offers clients the positive results without the downtime of previous laser techniques. Unlike older lasers that removed the top layers of skin, the ProFractional laser procedure produces tiny wounds of heat treated areas separated by areas of unaffected, healthy skin (Figure I). The spared tissue between treatment zones contains healthy skin cells that promote rapid wound healing. At the same time, each laser treatment penetrates up to 1500 microns into the dermis to remodel collagen. The ProFractional laser strives to achieve the skin improvements obtained with conventional laser resurfacing but without the associated side effects and downtime.

How does ProFractional laser work?

ProFractional uses laser energy to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin which are surrounded by areas of healthy, untreated skin. The zones of untreated skin invigorate the body’s natural healing process, and the treated areas stimulate production of new collagen, plumping up the skin and smoothing out wrinkles, lines, scars and other irregularities.

Think of your skin as a family portrait or digital photograph in need of high-quality restoration or touch up.
Just as a damaged painting is delicately restored one small area at a time, or a photographic image is altered, pixel by pixel, ProFractional laser treatment improves your appearance by affecting only a percentage of your skin at each treatment session. A series of treatments will be required to achieve the desired result.

Number of Treatments Required:
Clinical studies suggest that 3- 5 treatments at 4 week intervals produce a gradual remodelling of the skin components. The "good” dermal material that contains new collagen and elastin fibers will replace old epidermal and dermal tissue. Over a period of 6 months, clinical improvement in photo-aged skin correlates with dermal repair and positive skin changes.

A Typical Treatment

The treatment is often described as a prickling, heat sensation. We do everything possible to make the procedure comfortable. A topical anaesthetic ointment is applied 30 minutes prior to the treatment. For some individuals, oral pain medication may also be taken as prescribed by Dr. Miller. The treatment is performed by the registered nurse under the direction and supervision of Dr Miller. A treatment typically will take approximately 1 ½ hours for a full face.

Response to Treatment
The laser treatment offers the benefits of rapid healing and minimal downtime. Side effects typically involve swelling, flaking and redness...much like a sunburn. Swelling typically subsides within 3 – 5 days and redness usually fades over several days. After 24 hours clients may apply make-up to minimize the redness and appearance of the skin. You can return to most routine activities. There is limited, if any, risk of infection or scarring. Clients may feel a temporary “grittiness” to their skin after the treatment; this feeling disappears within a few days. This sandpaper like feeling and visible treatment pattern “screen door appearance” on your skin is a normal part of the healing phase.

Turn Back the Clock on Aging and Improve Scars
ProFractional laser is the latest most up to date technology for improving the signs of aging, acne scars and other scars related to trauma/ injury or previous medical conditions ( ie chicken pox). After your very first ProFractional laser treatment, you will begin to feel the difference in your skin, as it gradually becomes softer, smoother and fresher. Fine lines around your eyes will noticeably fade along with uneven coloring and the brown spots caused by aging and sun exposure. After several treatments, your friends and family will marvel at how youthful and healthy your skin looks. The results are so discreet and natural that only you and your doctor will know you've had a laser surgical procedure.

Safety of the treatment
The Sciton Pro-Fractional laser system is cleared by the FDA for dermatological procedures requiring the ablation and coagulation of soft tissue and for treatment of wrinkles and pigmented lesions.
